The Office: Season 3, Episode 23 “Beach Games”

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakroom! Yet again, I’m afraid this is shaping up to be one of those weeks where I just cannot get wait to get to the weekend. Work has certainly not been bad, just it is a week where there is far too much “how did you make that problem?” But aside from that, the workload has been mellow so I really shouldn’t be complaining too much. So what is new in my world otherwise? Well we got the new Dungeons and Dragons handbook, so I’m excited together with people to play that again. Agatha All Along just came out and while I haven’t watched it yet, I’m eager to so please no spoilers! And otherwise we are still settling into our new house, although we haven’t really touched any of our remaining boxes quite yet. But enough about that, you are here for the office Breakdown and boy did we have a big day!

So it all started the other day where Michael was having one of his mysterious medical situations. Basically, around 40 times a year Michael is suddenly very sick and unable to work but with no real symptoms. Each time Dwight is incredibly worried and spends a solid hour with him on WebMD. But I think we can all agree that each of us has spent a lot of accumulative time on WebMD trying to diagnosis ourselves and others. For those not familiar with the site, you can pinpoint parts of your body which are not well, choose symptoms, and it will try to offer you possible diagnoses. In all honesty, I’m sure most of the people who were using the site were not sick at all. This is interrupted when Pam tells Michael that he has a call from David Wallace at corporate, and he urges everyone out of his office for this mysterious call. Later that day, Michael announces that we are going to do a Beach Day! That’s right, the entire office is being closed down (except for Toby) and we get to go spend the day at the beach. Yes this might sound odd, but as soon as you call it a team building exercise then corporate cannot approve it fast enough.

After a nice bus ride, filled with group singing, we arrive at the beach and quickly move to stake out our spots on the beach. But Michael quickly decides to make it clear that we are not there to have fun but partake in a serious of group games. He first appoints leaders of teams who then choose from the remainder to be their teams. We have Team Voldemort led by Jim, who also has Karen and Kevin. Team Gryffindor is led by Dwight who recruited Creed and Ryan. We have the Blue Team with Stanley who is joined by Phyllis and Oscar. And, of course, Team USA with Andy at the helm and supported by Angela, Kelly, and Meredith. You will notice that Pam wasn’t included to join, and this is because he got to be tasked with diligent note taking. To help offer an explanation to this, Michael was actually invited to interview for a job with corporate. Michael is very confident in his abilities and assume he is getting the job, so he needs to figure out who to recommend for his job. And that is the purpose of the Beach Day, he is using it as a chance to put his top candidates through a series of trials so that they can prove themselves.

So what does Michael thing of his candidates? To him Jim is the cool, smart, good-looking guy like himself and would be a great role model. Con is that he can be pretty lazy; he will often spend only half an hour doing a job that takes Michael a whole day. We have Dwight who has the best sales record and loves the work more than anyone, but he is an idiot. We have Stanley in the mix because of all the important contributions black people have given society. And then Andy who is classy, went to Cornell, he trusts him; downside is he doesn’t really trust him. So those are the candidates, each got various scores from the days of the event; at point Jim had 10 points, Dwight got a gold star, and Stanley a thumbs up. Michael insisted Pam look for a conversion table but her notebook didn’t have one. If I had to grade them I’d say a gold star would be worth 30 points while a thumbs up is 20 points. Do you agree or do you have a better comparison?

So what is Michael basing his decision on? A big fan of the television show, Survivor, he has designed a serious of challenges, each more daunting than the last.

Egg and Spoon Race
A great manager has to be able to lead, so in this race the leader has to give instructions to one of their teammates to escort an egg in a spoon to the finish line. If that wasn’t hard enough, they are also blindfolded which is why they need the directions. At the end of this event, no one successfully completed the race (and quite a few didn’t take it seriously).

Hot Dog Eating Contest
A good manager must also be hungry and be fueled by that hunger in the workforce. Michael personally cooked over 800 hot dogs (it was actually Pam) so each person can beat the world record (the current record is 83 hot dogs by Joey Chestnut1). No one is enthused about this because there are no condiments and most people would rather have something like a turkey burger (Michael had only one made for himself). But once it was revealed that this would result in someone being made manager, they found their motivation. Andy actually walks away victorious in this event.

Sumo Wrestling
Next up, Michael brings out a serious of inflatable sumo suits that people will wrestle and force each other out of the sumo circle. Stanley certainly comes alive and goes crazy on Jim, scoring any easy win! But, in the end, it is Dwight who emerges victorious from the entire event. Oddly enough, it was shortly after this even concluded that Andy simply disappeared. I didn’t think he would just go home but I knew he was pretty upset about losing. And then I overheard Dwight and Angela talking about sabotage and how it was and ancient Dutch art. For the record, the word “sabotage” is actually French, coming from the word “saboter” which means “to wreck, bungle, or botch.”

Coal Walk
That is right, Michael commissioned someone to come out and set up as a coal walk, where we must face our fears and walk on a path of fire. No one is interested for even a moment, although we urge Michael to do it himself. He seems to think burning his foot on his Foreman Grill was enough and I will confirm, it is not the same thing at all. Michael cannot do but Dwight actually rises to the occasion and says he will stand out there until he is made manager. Ultimately, he collapses from pain and we have a whole problem of trying to get him out of there before he burns. So how exactly does this work? Well I have seen it mentioned in a television show and did find a study on it. So first, the theory is you move very fast so your foot does not last on the ember that long (Dwight shouldn’t have lingered) and the second piece is that embers do not store up enough heat to injure you as long as you move fast enough. So that is the physics reason, but now on to the study. The overall belief is that the firewalker can get so stimulated that they are fueled by adrenaline that this allows them to move through the fire without harm. When we often see these rituals conducted, there is a great deal of fanfare with music, dancing, and a crowd of people to work the firewalker into a state of frenzy2. Dwight had none of this so this was his second mistake in attempting to do the walk. In the end, this was not a great group to try to accomplish this.

“Bob Hope” Factor
Going into the lightning round and that is people need to prove that they can inspire the troops like Bob Hope (or Amanda Bynes) and Michael insists they get in front of everyone to motivate us. Jim starts but he reveals that he doesn’t think he should go for this job and is actually going to be interviewing for the corporate job, alongside Karen. With him out of the running, we have Dwight get up with his version of the Aristocrats joke. This joke has been around a long time, if you go to Youtube you can find it told by numerous comedians. The premise is this: a family is trying to book their routine with a talent scout so they beg for them let them audition. The family then proceeds to perform all sorts of unsettling acts, this is where the comedian really makes it their own joke but it can involve sexual acts, violence, murder, and gross bodily processes. At the end of this horrific explanation, the talent agent can but mutter “and what are you called?” To which the family excitedly replies, “The Aristocrats!” Dwight’s performance was not the greatest, so I’d recommend looking up a proper performance.

So while we are all busy listening to Dwight, it turns out that Pam decided to do the firewalking and was able to make it across. So then, empowered by this, she came down and really laid into everyone. She brought up that most of us didn’t go to her art show months ago despite the fact that she tries to show up for everyone else. And she zeroed in on Jim and how they used to be such close friends and they don’t even talk anymore and she misses him. She sort of petered off after this because her feet started to hurt but that was the overall situation. And that sort of brought the rest of the day to a big of a standstill.

And that, everyone, was what happened at the office! You know understand a bit about how firewalking is possible, it is a combination of physics as well as psychology. So I do not recommend trying it unless you can speed through as well as be properly psyched up. We also learned about how Michael judges the qualities a manager needs to have. If you were designing a series of events to test people for such a job, what might you choose? And what about yourself with Michael’s challenges, how well do you think you would have done? Tell us in the comments!

I hope you call can get through your Friday, and until next week I’ll see you around the Breakroom!

The Office: Season 3, Episode 22 “Women’s Appreciation”

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakroom! How we are all doing today? Did you survive the week? Let us talk about that struggle of life that many of us face. Sometimes life really just gets to be really hard to deal with, even when nothing is really wrong. I have a new house, we just got the new furniture set up today, and still I am struggling a bit. I started school again this week, hoping a new degree will expand upon my personal credentials and make me a more desirable hire and already I am facing new stress and angst over it, because I thought I was finally through that part of my life and I just want to drop it. Work was also a pretty exhausting one, seems every period people forget they have responsibilities if they would like to be paid, and I really just wanted to post something about being out sick or something. But I’m here, trying to push through my feelings and exhaustion so those 2 or 3 readers I have will have a new post. Life can really be a lot sometimes and I just wanted to share how it has been impacting me lately and hopefully this helps someone out there feeling like they are on the only one.

Lets try to focus on something a bit more fun and I can tell you what happened at the office this week!

The day really kicked off when our own Phyllis Vance was flashed in the parking lot! Evidently, a man was out there with a map asking for directions, and when she came over to help he had “it” out on the map. Jim reached out to the police department and evidently this wasn’t the first call this morning, so we have a serial flasher out there. Dwight is almost giddy because he gets to have a new task force to oversee and begins to implement new rules such as women cannot wear makeup, or they need Dwight’s permission to speak to strangers. Naturally, everyone is pretty upset that he is trying to treat them like second class citizens, forcing Michael to intervene. His own conference meeting results in him being very misogynistic, talking about how difficult it must be for them because they are not skinny like the women in the magazines. Plus he often asks them if they are on their period when they are upset to know if it is “real.” I feel like I do not have to say this, but no you should not be asking your direct reports or colleagues if they are on their period. With the office being “too masculine” Michael decides to take them someplace they can feel comfortable, the Steamtown Mall. Not going to lie, I was a bit jealous because I could have done with a few hours away from working shopping.

Although I wasn’t there, I did hear about it from Pam on how it went. Turns out, Michael had a pretty cathartic time because he used this trip to talk about problems he has been having with Jan. She does things like video tape them having sex and then critiques him after, or they roleplay and he wears the school girl skirt. For the record, if he was comfortable wearing it then who cares, whatever two consenting adults want to do, nothing wrong here. In the end he comes to realize that he is simply not happy when he is with her, and he decides to break up with her with their support. By break up with her, he leaves a voice message on his phone. For the record, this is a cowardly way to break up with something, although perhaps not as bad a a text message. The really awkward part was she showed up to the office and listened to the message while in his office. A delayed message is not the worst part of why this is a poor means to break up with someone, but it certainly doesn’t help.

So what did the rest of us do while Michael took the women to the mall? It was Kevin who said he wanted to know what the women’s bathroom was like; I knew that if it was anything like the men’s bathroom, it wasn’t anything special. Turns out, they have cultivated a nice little area so perhaps we could learn from them to embellish our own room. They have scented candles, various magazines, and even one of those Zen waterfalls. While we were chatting, I found out Jim and Karen have actually been dating for six months now. I don’t know about you but their relationship has never really screamed “sparks” to me, not sure if they will last too much longer. Our bathroom trip ended when Creed came in because evidently his one weird thing is to go Number 2 in the women’s bathroom. I’m thinking it’s because the men’s room typically is pretty nasty in many offices because, let’s be honest, men can be gross.

In addition to these adventures, I will mention that the only ones who were off on their own were Andy, formally known as Drew formally known as Andy, and Dwight. They were tenaciously trying to track down the flasher to bring them to justice. Their big plan was posting pictures around the neighborhood that Pam had sketched based off a description from Phyllis. Interestingly enough, I would’ve sworn the picture was of Dwight, just without his glasses and with a tiny mustache. If I had to guess, I’m pretty sure Pam decided to do one of her classic Pam Pranks on Dwight. She could certainly teach Jim a thing or two because her jokes are often a bit more subtle.

And that, everyone, was the office breakdown! I will apologize as I know this breakdown wasn’t as long as usual. As I mention earlier, it really is one of those weeks for me and I’m really feeling it. I often ask for comments but instead I want to give you all a task, in the spirit of this breakdown and “appreciating” people, I want you to go out and tell them that you appreciate them. It doesn’t have to be a woman and it could be a family member, friend, colleague, or even the person at checkout at the grocery store. Sometimes being told that you’re appreciate makes all the difference in the world, so let us try to spread that feeling. I’m thankful to all of you who read this because it does help me feel like these posts are contributing to the world somehow and that I am accomplishing something.

Until next week, I’ll see you around the Breakroom!

The Office: Season 3, Episode 17 “Business School”

Good morning everyone and I wish you all a big TGIF! Overall it’s been a pretty good week around here over at the Breakroom! We closed out my first official Dungeons&Dragons session, I made a batch of my amazing lemon bars (the key is juicing your own lemons), been going over our house inspections, have been clearing out a ridiculous amount of personal items that need to be gotten rid of, and taking care one of our poor dogs with a tail infection. When you actually lay them all out it certainly becomes clear that this was a pretty busy week, now I know why I feel so spent! I suppose I have not been the only one with a busy because a few other people around the office, so let me get to that Breakdown.

The big topic of the day was that our own Michael Scott was called upon to be a special lecturer emeritus at Ryan’s business school. I think Michael was just making it a bigger deal than it was, basically the students can bring in their boss to speak to the class and it bumps up their grade a full letter. Ryan figured he’d be crazy not take advantage of that, but I don’t think he thought this through enough before pulling the trigger. But you cannot say that Michael was not going to give this his all because he was geared up and ready, even trying to line up any good advice he’s given before. Dwight said the best advice he has ever given was “Don’t be an idiot.” This advice is very simple, whenever you are about to do something you just ask yourself if an idiot would do it. Spoiler, if you do not know what idiot would do then you’re going to get some outside help with your decision making. Additionally, this motivational picture is meant for you.

Well while that was happening, Pam invited everyone in the office to her art show that evening. She’s been taking some art classes lately to perfect her craft and this is a showcase event where the public and friends/family get to come and see what they have been working on. Unfortunately, most of the office didn’t seem to enthused or else people like Toby were a bit busy. I did make it a point to head down there and see her for a bit, and unfortunately attendance from the office hadn’t been great by the time I’d swung by. Roy and his brother had come through, I guess Oscar and his boyfriend showed up but Pam said she didn’t get a chance to say hi to them. But the event wasn’t over yet so I told her to keep holding out. I personally loved her art, it was simplistic and most consisted of water colors from around the office. Art doesn’t have to be over-the-top or rule changing, art is simply defined by how it speaks to people. I personally loved this one of an exterior shot of the office building and would’ve loved a copy of it.

If you thought all of the excitement was happening out of the office, you would be wrong. It started when Dwight noticed some animal stool on the ground and figured out it must have come from the ceiling above reception. He was pretty smug because he noticed this and was going to be a hero for getting a bird removed from the ceiling, but as soon as she shifted a tile he screamed out that it was actually a bat. This was when people began to freak out as the bat escaped and people were terrified it was going to come at them. We got it locked in the conference room, but then Dwight’s second attempt (accompanied by Creed) got it directed into the back hallway near the bathrooms. Unfortunately, this got Meredith stuck in the women’s room with the bat aside. Incidentally, this inspired a fancy Jim Prank in which he is trying to trick Dwight into thinking he was bit by the bat and changing into a vampire. Oddly enough, Dwight needed very little convincing to buy this because he even had a stake lined up in case he felt like he was in danger. Kudos to Dwight for not assuming Jim would automatically be evil; his sworn enemy and yet he is allowing him to find his way as a vampire. In the end, Dwight runs for it and is able to use a garbage bag to capture the bat, and Meredith’s head.

I know that bats can be very scary, but please, do not go around killing our nocturnal creatures of the night. Most of the bats we are used to eat insects so they help to keep populations of mosquitos down, which also helps mitigate diseases spread by them. Their stool (guano) is also an amazing fertilizer so this helps contribute right back to the environment. Now if you happen to get one in your house or office, it is important to be careful in removing them because they can bite and there is an unfortunate risk of rabies. Incidentally, I have heard that should someone ever wake up in a room and discover a bat was there you are supposed to assume you were bit and go out to get tested. If you go here you can visit the Humane Society’s page on bats so they can help wall through what you need to be aware of when interacting with bats. But please, if possible try to have them relocated alive because we do not want to lose any more bats! For those who really want to support them, perhaps consider getting a bat house. Just like people can set up birdhouses, you can also set up bat houses to offer a special home for our friends the bat1. I personally haven’t set one up so if anyone here has, please leave a comment to give us all the best tips to know about them!

In case you forgot, the original big event for the day was Michael being asked to speak at Ryan’s business class, but I chose to leave the lowdown on this till the end. It sounds like he started off okay, if that is what you would like to call it. He began with ripping up some poor students textbook (which are grossly overpriced, I recommend renting when possible) and then decided to teach them about business. First, there are four types of business: tourism, food service, railroads, sales, hospitals/manufacturing, and air travel. No you did not miscount, Michael seems to have misunderstood the definition of four. From there, he segued into how to start a business. First, you need to have a building followed by deciding on something to sell such as stickers. Basically, the key to starting a business is selling your product and the more you sell, the more profits (fancy word for money) you get.

Ryan is finally able to reign the presentation back in since normally these are a question and answer format, so Michael should just take questions. Unfortunately, Michael sort of choked on the questions. He danced right pass how has Dunder Mifflin adapted to a paperless world. I would have answered that despite these changes, there are aspects in life and business that will always require paper. The key would be to scale back and refocus on those industries that will always need paper. He was then asked what do you say to someone who wants to leave you for a nationwide chain. These are competitive but customer service has always been what set Dunder Mifflin apart so extra focus should be placed on it. Then he was asked how the Herfindahl Index was affected by the merger. This is a business term, essentially it is a means of measuring the level of competitiveness in a set market based on comparable company sizes. Holding an MBA I did study this in school, but have not actually heard this term used out of school although I believe it would be more used in the study of economics. These trends of question ultimately reveal that Ryan has been telling the class he believes Dunder Mifflin will be obsolete in five to ten years. Even the rest of the class seems to agree because there is too much competition and they cannot handle it. Michael goes crazy because he believes Dunder Mifflin is the greatest company, and he is adamant they are wrong because they are simply students with no true business experience. I have to agree, it is very easy for college students to get these ideas of how business is and at the end of the day, until you are out there you have no idea that it isn’t as “out of the book” as we would like to believe. And of course, it is rarely as fair as we would like it to be. But Michael takes control of the situation, storms out, and ultimately gets his justice with Ryan. He relocates Ryan back to the annex, so he is stuck working alongside Kelly all day which is a more than suitable punishment.

And that was what happened around the office today, so what did we learn? It is very scary to put yourself out there in something like pursuing art like Pam did, and when we know someone doing this we should take the time to support them and let them know we are proud of them. We learned that bats can be pretty scary when they surprise us, but they are our neighbors too so they do not deserved to be killed because they are cute and important. And we learned that sometimes business school can be overrated (and a business degree is a guaranteed key to a job anymore) so maybe we acknowledge that school learning needs to be combined with life experience.

I hope you all have a great Friday, remember to get your tickets to Teeb Con in just a few short weeks! And if you learned anything special this week, let us know in the comments. And until next time, I’ll see you around the Breakroom!

The Office: Season 3, Episode 16 “Phyllis’s Wedding”

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakroom! While this week may have been mellow in many aspects, it has certainly been pretty crazy around here as well! As I mentioned yesterday in my repost of “Office Olympics” we have been busy looking at new houses lately and this has certainly been a busy process, not to mention a stressful one. On a lighter note, the 2024 Olympics are kicking off tonight with their opening ceremony in Paris. I’m sorely jealous not to be able to see it in person, but it will still be cool to see Paris again even if I cannot be there. My last chance to relive my time there was while watching the Netflix movie Under Paris so I expect this will involve fewer sharks. Incidentally, if you have not yet seen this film I absolutely recommend it, including watching it in the native French with English subtitles. But enough about all that, let us talk about Phyllis’s wedding!

Leading up to the big day, Jim was able to see the payoff to one of his “classic” pranks. For weeks, he has been finding times to reboot his computer (which sets off a notification sound) and would then offer Dwight an Altoid mint. Turns out he has been recreating the experiment of Pavlov’s dog that he learned about in school. For those unfamiliar, the experiment involved Ivan Pavlov who created an experiment with dogs. He found that dogs normally salivate when given food, and when he provided food he began to ring a bell at the same time. Over time, they were conditioned to the point that he could ring the bell without providing food, and they began to salivate because the bell meant food. In this scenario, Dwight was conditioned to anticipate a mint to clear his palate when he heard the sound of Jim’s computer. Creative and scientific, so I do like those aspects, but I feel Jim put way too much time into this gag that could’ve been better spent. How much paper do you really sell, Jim?

Now for the main event, this week was Phyllis’s wedding to Bob Vance (Vance Refrigeration) and you’ve never seen a happier bride. It was a beautiful day, and she invited the entire office so it was shaping up to be an amazing event. However, she did ask Michael to essentially be part of the wedding party by pushing her father in his wheelchair down the aisle with her. Because of this, he is likening himself as the father of the bride in such ways that because he signs her paychecks he is also contributing to funding the wedding and such. This goes, most likely exactly as you would expect. He is doing everything in his power to be in all of the photographs, he comes to see her in her room as she is getting ready, he tries to interject with a 45-minute long speech. In her defense, Phyllis did this in order to wrangle a six week honeymoon. The question is, was it really worth it in the end? You might be able to gloss over some of what happened, but when he interrupts the actual ceremony it gets very hard. To our excitement, while escorting Phyllis down the aisle her father is able to stand up and finish walking her down himself. Not one to be overshadowed, Michael proceeds to escort the wheelchair down the aisle and then took it upon himself to stand with the groomsmen. The patience that Phyllis had cannot be matched, that is for sure. Ultimately, Michael is escorted out during the wedding reception after he tried to take over the entire evening and tasked Dwight with being the bouncer. But things ultimately work out in the end because Michael was able to help track down Phyllis’s uncle Al who had gone missing.

If you thought that was crazy, there was plenty of other things going on behind the scenes. Turns out, Phyllis used a ton of ideas for her wedding that Pam was originally using for hers to Roy. The wedding invitations, flowers choices, wedding dress, and evening hiring Kevin’s band to play the reception (shout out to Scrantonicity). I don’t know if it was just her feeling lonely or because she felt like she was at her own wedding, but it seems it rekindled a little something between Pam and Roy because I saw them heading out together holding hands before the night was up. I caught Jim seeing that too and he certainly had an odd look on his face so he didn’t realize that was coming either.

And then there was Dwight, he got it in his head that there was a guarantee of wedding crashers at the wedding. I guess he had seen the movie Wedding Crashers but this was in error, turns out he thought he was a seeing a movie about bear attacks and he sat through the entire film waiting for the bear. That’s the thing with bear attacks, you never see them coming. But as a gift to Phyllis, he spent the entire day trying to catch potential crashers. I saw him talking to uncle Al right before he went missing, but otherwise I don’t believe he actually caught anyone. How many people actually crash weddings, anyway? Perhaps his biggest mistake was how he famously stated that “there are too many people, we need a new plague.” Still think that Dwight? You got to see a global pandemic so I believe you got your wish.

Overall, I think we really need to call out that so many people did things at this wedding you shouldn’t do and we can all learn from them. First, do not try to take over a wedding like Michael did. Unless it is your wedding, just sit in your seat and keep to yourself. I don’t care if you are someone’s sister, the mother of of someone getting married, or so-and-so’s best friend, it is not your day and you don’t matter so stop talking. And that includes reception toasts; do not give a toast unless you were specifically asked to, and try to keep it brief. I’ve sat through too many toasts that were all the exact same where the maid-of-honor has some hilarious story about the bride. The stories are all the same and as I mentioned, keep the story brief because you are not the bride. For people like Pam, instead of venting about how someone took all of your ideas maybe you should see it as a compliment that she loved your style. It is not your day, you called off your wedding, so keep it to yourself. Stick to the dress code, and only wear white if you are told that it is okay. I’m talking about Kelly who always has to be the center of attention; this is a wedding so dress appropriately. Besides skipping the white, I am sick of going to weddings and seeing people in casual shorts, I mean how hard is it to have a pair of slacks when you are attending a formal wedding? And rant over, I just get a bit worked up with how crazy people can get over weddings. But Phyllis was gracious, patient, and was the most beautiful bride.

And that was our Dunder Mifflin wedding! I can’t say I’ve been to many weddings like this, if anyone has their own crazy wedding stories, please share in the comments! I hope everyone else is going to watch the Olympics, starting with the opening ceremony tonight. And I want to leave with sharing two pieces of Michael Scott quotes from his wedding toasts.

“Webster’s Dictionary defines “wedding” as the fusing of two metals with a hot torch. Well, you know something. I think you guys are two metals. Gold medals.”

“Phyllis and Bob: their celebrity couple name would be Phlob.”

Thank you all, have a great weekend and I’ll see you around the Breakroom!
