Finer Things Club: Autumn Reading List

Good morning everyone to this Monday! Feeling inspired over the weekend I am excited to share a list of books currently on my own reading list this autumn as part of our own Finer Things Club. There was a period that I was reading every night but as most things, once you fall out of the routine it can be very hard to get back into it. While I have only ever read by myself, many people find enjoyment in a book club that be done amongst friends or even through work. Through this article by Grace He, they talk about the benefits of starting an office book club and how to go about it. At its core it is about forming a club that colleagues can exchange ideas, get to know each other, find an excuse to read more, and maybe you’ll make some friends along the way.1

In addition the organization and prep work, it is obviously important to have a book lined up (whether reading alone or in a club) so I wanted to share the books current on my agenda to read the next few months. A couple are oldies that I love to come back to, and then several brand new books I am eager to read. I hope some of them seem interesting to you and if they are, go out and get a copy either online (I am including links) or to your local bookstore. If you have some of your own suggestions, feel free to share!

Book cover of 'The Secret of Secrets' by Dan Brown, featuring a keyhole design on a red background with gold text.

The Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown
You either loved or hated The Da Vinci Code and if you loved it, check out the newest book in the series following Robert Langdon on another adventure. I have loved these books (and films) since the very beginning so I was quick to get it preordered am excited to see how this picks up from the last book.

Cover of the book 'Dominion of the Traxus: Mercy' by Lily Davis, featuring an illustrated scene with a character in a blue glow and another character in a darker silhouette against a golden background.

Mercy by Lily Davis
I got to meet this author at Excalibur Con 2025 and hear about this first book in their Dominion of Traxans series. This series is inspired by fantasy, science fiction and as a member of the LGBTAQI2S+ community, they ensure the world they have created is inclusive of our community. I am incredibly excited to recommend this series and to open it up myself!

Book cover of 'Children of Angels' by Faith MacGregor, featuring a fantasy landscape with a warrior figure in armor against a dramatic sky filled with clouds and sailing ships.

Children of Angels by Faith MacGregor
This was another author I got to meet at Excalibur Con which goes to show everyone can find something they like there, including getting to meet writers! This is also the first in a series inspired heavily by classic mythology and having raised myself on Greek mythology as a kid I know this will be right up my alley.

Cover of the book 'Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution' by Rainn Wilson, featuring bold blue and white typography.

Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution by Rainn Wilson
You know him as Dwight Schrute by actor Rainn Wilson devoted a great deal of time trying to get in touch with his spirituality and trying evaluate what we need as humans. Mixed in with his own brand of humor he has written a book on perhaps the lack of spirituality people have in their lives, going beyond individual cultures and religions. I am eager to go on this journey with Rainn as I think all of you should too!

Cover of the book 'Jurassic Park' by Michael Crichton, featuring a dinosaur skull and bold red and white typography.

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
The book the started the entire franchise; given that we recently got a new movie in the series now is the perfect time to read this book if you haven’t. This has been one of my favorite books since school and I make it a point to reread it every couple of years. While the movie is one my favorite of all time, this absolutely fleshes out the world so much better. To all of my readers still obsessed with dinosaurs after all these years, this one is for you.

Book cover for 'Brendan and the Beast' by Fox Beckman, featuring a young man and a beast amidst roses, set against a mystical background.
Cover of the book 'Stolen from Tomorrow' by Fox Beckman, featuring an image of two hands and a clock design, representing themes of time and love.

Brendan and the Beast by Fox Beckman/Stolen From Tomorrow by Fox Beckman
Did I hear you wanted a gay retelling of a classic fairy tale? Written by a good friend of mine, I absolutely need to recommend this to anyone looking for some queer (and spicy) books to curl up with this autumn. If you are more in the mood for a fantastical series, look up Stolen from Tomorrow which is Book 1 in The Trust Trilogy which blends magic, supernatural encounters, and love story stretching through time.

Book cover of 'Some Things I Still Can't Tell You' by Misha Collins featuring a night cityscape with lights and poetic text.

Some Things I still Can’t Tell You by Misha Collins
I got a few of these years ago to give out during Christmas, a collection of poems by Misha Collins of Supernatural fame. Not every book needs to be an epic tale, sometimes an entire story can be told with a simple poem. It was in high school that I went through a period where I was very interested in poetry so it felt necessary to include at least one.

Cover of 'The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft' featuring ornate gold typography on a dark blue background.

The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft by H. P. Lovecraft
Going into the Halloween season I had to also include something with a spookier feel and this is the one I wanted to read, although I always get an urge this time of year. Rather than a novel, I offer up the complete fiction works of H. P. Lovecraft, the man who brought us Cthulu. Sometimes you just need a short story to get you by so in a way this is a multitude of stories and books rather than just one. So grab a copy of this to read on the couch, pumpkin spice latte next to you after a successful outing to Spirit Halloween.

I hope you are inspired by my recommendations to pick up a copy of one or more of these and rediscover the joys of reading. If anyone has been part of an office book club, let us know about the experience! Any tips on facilitating a successful club?

Hope you all have a great day, and I hope to see you at the next meeting of the Finer Things Club!

The Office: Season 5, Episode 24 “Heavy Competition”

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakroom! Hope you are all doing well this week, especially given that it does feel like fall this week. While I have not officially started decorating for Halloween (although parts of my house already have this aesthetic) I did make some chicken noodle soup with a leftover rotisserie chicken so I can officially say I’ve gone into soup and stew season.

What I want to talk about this week, which has been a bit of a pattern it seems, is about motivation. What do we do to keep ourselves motivated for our personal goals and ambitions. This week my husband and I have not actually made it to the gym since Saturday. We have been busy with things around the house, work has been busy, and just in general some personal things have left us without the motivation. This is certainly one of the reasons we stopped working out before, and it is quite common with anyone trying to stay active. But what happens is you get out of the routine and you start to think of yourself as a failure and before you know it you are spiraling. And the old me certainly used to be like that and even as I write this, I am reminding myself that I have not failed. Life happens and despite what we do, it is impossible to control every aspect of our lives and sometimes it means we have to make compromises. But I am planning on going to the gym after this so that is my new goal and I intend on following through. Another example of motivation? I had interviewed for a job a couple of weeks ago and yesterday I got a phone call back on it and was told that they were going with another candidate. Evidently I surprised the recruiter with how calm I was over it, explaining that because I knew the interviewing manager, if they went with someone else I trust that it was someone who was a better fit for the position. I admitted that of course I was disappointed, but given that I had no negative feedback on my interview and I believe I did the best I could there wasn’t much use putting myself down. So what did I do? I went ahead and found another position or two and applied for them, trying to stay confident and motivated that I will achieve my professional goals. I know I sound incredibly confident and optimistic like (like the vast majority of LinkedIn “influencers”) but truth is I am also scared and struggle with remaining so confident in my skills. I tell you all to remain motivated and confident because that is what most of have. We have the world making us feel like we are not good enough, so we have support each other and come back with a reaffirming “yes we are.” To reaffirm my confidence I full intend to spend a good half hour of cardio listening to some inspiring music (thinking TX2 and Arrows in Action) and then track down a couple other jobs I meant to apply to before the weekend.

So, to my readers, how do you inspire yourself to stay confident and motivated when you feel like giving up?

I have either inspired you or thoroughly made you depressed, hopefully the former because here at the Breakroom the only ones allowed to be depressed are those working for Dunder Mifflin. Speaking of which let us jump into what recently happened in Scranton!

In an interesting twist when I went to stop by the Michael Scott Paper Company, I came across the three of them (Michael, Pam, and Ryan) throwing cheese balls at each other to catch in their mouths. As Pam explains it, while there is a limit to how much cold calling you can do in a day there is no limit to the amount of cheese balls you can throw at a face. This ties in a well to what I posted above with motivation. Sometimes the key to remaining motivated is by not thinking of the task at hand and stepping away to clear your mind. This is also a great example of bonding for the team, which being such a small company it is important that have a strong relationship. Reminder that work doesn’t necessarily mean working every second you are on the clock.

Today was a pretty odd day around Dunder Mifflin, namely with Andy. You will recall that upon finding out Dwight and Angela had been sleeping together, he called off the wedding. Because he put down so many non-refundable deposits, he is attempting to pawn off anything he can to recoup some money. In a big swing, he tries to convince Jim and Pam to pay $9,000 for Andy’s Acapella band he had booked. As in the one he was in during college and would be himself and his friends from college. In a shocking twist Pam gave a hard no to this, for which Andy was quick to judge her. Obviously still scorn by Angela, he starts trying to explain to Jim that Pam is not good for him and he should (essentially) call off the wedding. He even spent the entire day trying to console and take care of Jim so he could find the strength to move on from Pam. Naturally this is just a Jim prank, pretending to be an emotional wreck only to turn it around on Andy as a lesson that he cannot let what happened with Angela control him. Andy seemed touched after it all, and I suppose it allowed Jim to really get his attention. Still seemed like a waste of day to me.

First things first, Charles has implemented a new dress code at Dunder Mifflin, namely requiring Dwight to wear a long sleeve, white shirt instead of his usual short sleeve yellows. He describes it as cutting off his attack readiness and is not thrilled. Obviously a dress code is nothing new, many companies require some form of code to ensure employees meet the minimum level of professionalism in the workplace. In recent years I have seen more of a push to focus on gender neutral guidelines which I find incredibly refreshing as there was a time that almost every company had separate rules for men versus women. It is hard to give major recommendations since each company is different but I can recommend starting at with this article, Guide To Business Attire (With Examples)
by Hanne Keiling
, where they breakdown the different types of business attire to evaluate what is best for your company. But typically a button down shirt, some slacks, nice shoes, maybe a cardigan or jacket, and then well kept hair and jewelry will be accepted most offices.1

Because of his disdain with these changes, Dwight has been dabbling in some corporate espionage and passing information to Michael about suitable clients to target. I was surprised by this given that Dwight should be more loyal to Dunder Mifflin than Michael. This changes once he gets called into a meeting with Charles who raves about his work ethic and even suggests they go out for a drink sometime to discuss his future. This is more than Michael ever did for him and in an instant, he is prepared to take down the Michael Scott Paper Company. Even revealing to Charles the next time Michael tries to meet and they ambush him, letting him know he is cut off from further information. Michael decides to get his revenge on Dwight by going after his biggest client, to which Dwight was actually nervous. Michael is able to get a last minute meeting using his Rolodex. I did have one in a previous position and they are not terrible, but what I think the key piece to remember is that Michael uses his for more than just contact information. He has personally written down information like family members, dislikes, and hobbies to ensure he can maintain that personal touch and show he knows them. I think everyone should do this, especially if they work in sales and every sale is important. If you wanted one for myself you could write “Nathan: gay, three dogs, loves to cook, don’t call Nate.” That’s what such notes should be in that it gives a couple of things to talk about and clarifies to not call me by a nickname.

Dwight tries to call a truce over this and insists on meeting the team for lunch so they can come to an agreement, but in typical Dwight fashion this was all a ruse. With the Company out of the office, he sneaks in to steal Michael’s Rolodex in an effort to defeat him. But it would take more than that to bring down Michael, and he proves that by taking the meeting with Dwight’s client. Best of all, he calls Dwight from his cell and lets him listen in as he talks with him. And he actually does an amazing job at spinning why Michael is the better option and that Dwight simply doesn’t meet what he needs anymore. Dwight tries to stop him and actually shows up to the meeting (getting past the secretary with a “spin move”) but a big part ultimately comes down to price and that was what they are looking at. As a publishing company they do use a lot of paper, and it really doesn’t feel like many of these companies care about this paper war that is going on behind the scenes.

And that everyone, was this week’s Breakdown!. We leave this week seeing Michael Scott Paper Company slowly taking over the region and siphoning off some of Bunder Mifflin’s top clients. Will they keep this up or will Dwight be able to get his revenge. Stop by next week to find out! And in the meantime, I hope to have a nice podcast update for you very soon, I have absolutely not stopped thinking about it and have been working away at getting this frontier ready to go.

I hope you all have a great weekend, stay motivated, and I’ll look for you around the Breakroom!

The Office: Season 5, Episode 23 “Michael Scott Paper Company”

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakdown! So what have we had happen this week? Well, we survived the bachelor party last weekend so that was a good start to the week. Also I have a hot tip for people doing a summer party; if you are planning on doing Jello shots, make sure to also do alcohol-free shots as well. Not everyone wants to have alcohol, but very few people will turn down some Jello. I chose to do this and they were pretty popular. I also tried my hand at making some alcohol-free Fireball as part of a drinking game, I will have to include the recipes that I did in the future because they also ended up being pretty dang popular. While I have hosted plenty of times, I haven’t spent much time getting very creative when it came to the drinks so I feel like I got to get out my inner mixologist.

What about some good business advice, I think the piece I want to call out is what to do when you are feeling anxious and stressed at work. We all have those times where we feel overwhelmed, and truth is that a lot of the time it probably has very little to do with work itself. There are certainly times where it actually is nice to have some work to keep you busy and take your mind off things, but it is important to be able to recognize when it is necessary to step away for a mental health break. Step outside for some fresh air, treat yourself to a sweet snack, find funny videos on your phone, do whatever you need to calm your brain down. If you can line it up on your regular breaks, then great! If you cannot, I hope you have a leader as understanding as my own where you can let them know you need to take a personal few minutes and need to step away. If we don’t take the time to acknowledge where our headspace is or if you have the mental bandwidth to deal with the tasks at hand, it could ultimately result in a messier situation. Your work will still be there when you come back so grab that chocolate, turn on some music, and look at the silly memes being sent your way.

With that said, let us get into today’s Breakdown. Picking up from last week, we are officially unveiling the office space of the Michael Scott Paper Company. Michael, Pam, and Ryan all show up fully prepared to take on their first formal day in the space. Ryan simply brought himself and his lunch, Pam showed up giddy to start and brought a plant for the space, and Michael brought in a goldfish and a giant barrel of cheese puffs. But he did more than that as he took the time to update contacts, lined up product distributers, and sent out an evite (electronic invitation) to people for their pancake luncheon later that day. Overall I feel like this was a good setup to a first day in the office, but that doesn’t mean things cannot go down hill from there.

I feel each of them really had their own internal struggles. Ryan simply didn’t seem like he wanted to be there. He is kind of a brat and spent the whole day talking on the phone or putting pictures on the computer. I do believe that deep down, his internal conflict was a combination of he still didn’t believe the company was real and perhaps he is struggling to let himself feel inspired by work again. Or he is simply a punk who thinks he is too cool for this group and just wants to get with friends and hang out “Scranton Style,” whatever that means. Pam was very much trying to remain excited but the day just showed her that the job wasn’t what she had hoped it would be. She was arguing with Ryan the entire day, felt cold in the closet/office, and felt pressured to take on the secretarial duties in the office. At the height of their discord, Michael suggested each person gets to pick a corner of the office and that becomes their private space. Since Michael needs two, Pam gets stuck with the corner with the copier (which coincidentally was the old copier from Dunder Mifflin that was tossed out). In a fit she actually stormed out and came up to the Dunder Mifflin off and essentially begged Charles for a job. There wasn’t anything available, unfortunately, so he had to return back to Michael. Michael also felt a strong sense of gloom today as well. Between seeing Ryan and Pam argue, then suspect Pam was trying to leave, and a very disappointing turnout to the luncheon he felt like he had made a huge mistake.

It was the end of the day and you could have almost bet money that the company was going to give up then, everyone seemed so defeated. But then Pam received a phone call from the one non-Dunder Mifflin person who showed up to their sad little luncheon. He has his own company and, as it turns out, he was in the market for a paper company and chose to place an order. The mood completely shifted after that, you’d swear they never had any doubt. It is true that the world isn’t always fair and that good things do not always happen to good people. But they sometimes do and when they do, it reminds us to not give up on ourselves. Sometimes it is that one win which is all that is needed to propel you forward to keep moving on.

It was a straightforward day at the Michael Scott Paper Company, but what about Dunder Mifflin? Charles hired a new secretary who is coincidentally named Kelly. So our original Kelly has taken it upon herself to rush to Charles and say “yes, you wanted me” each time he would call out for the other Kelly. Her logic is that if he hears this enough, he will actually want her. As silly as this sounds, it can happen because a person will start to associate a feeling or phrase with a person if it happens enough. But new Kelly decides to go by her middle name, Erin, to make it easier. Kelly Kapoor just gets angry because her middle name is Rajnigandha which she absolutely hates. Contrary to what Kevin believes, my research tells me this does come off as a girl’s name.

Andy and Dwight have started to spend a lot of time together and are actually going camping together after work. Despite having been rivals for so long, they found a mutual admiration for one another which seems to happen a lot (according to Dwight). Even when they discover they both have a thing for Erin, they quickly pivot and focus on their friendship. Frankly there isn’t much more to it, they are annoying apart and more annoying together playing music and singing together in the break room.

Finally, perhaps the most annoying part of the day has to do with our very own Jim. Early on in the morning, Jim was asked by Charles to put together a rundown of his client list and to then get it faxed over to the distribution list. And I have an entire series of questions and confusion about this. First, Jim has no idea what a rundown is and he didn’t bother to ask. It is true that a rundown could mean a variety of things, but he should have been able to figure out the gist of what Charles expected from this. But still, it would have been as simple as asking him what specifics does he want to see in this rundown? Charles actually should have clarified this because unless the company routinely has a format referred to as “a rundown” then he is simply asking for a summary but without any parameters. Another issue I have is, there should already be a report or list someplace which is a rundown of Jim’s clients. Charles should be able to look it up or pull from a file and he would have it all; or Jim could’ve done this as well. I do not believe there isn’t a master list of their clients someplace in the office. Finally, why is Charles only asking Jim to do this? I would imagine that Charles should want this from everyone, in which case he would have sent out an email specifying the parameters of what he wants to see in “a rundown.” I will sum this up as Jim is lame for not asking for insight, and Charles for assuming that every company uses the same lingo. Both of them should just get over themselves because they are not being productive. For those reading this, we are actually in a much better place than Jim is. If someone gave me a vague request like that, I very easily could use an AI program to take the information I have and give me a pretty good example of a rundown. But still, I think my key advice with this is if you are tasked with something you are unsure about, take the time to ask. I am very routinely tasked with running certain reports or audits to then provide to leaders or employees. Very often their requests are very vague, likely because they do not realize how many variations I could answer such a request. I take the time to respond to breakdown what I believe they are looking for and will prepare, but to correct me if I need to include a different piece. For example, I am often asked to provide an employee’s worked hours. This might sound simple, but the phrase “worked hours” carries a few different meanings. Are they trying to figure out their placement to their next wage increase? Maybe they need a breakdown of their paid hours to ensure they aren’t short hours. Or perhaps they to provide the hours to renew a license so it must be specifically worked and exclude any sort of paid time off. By taking five minutes at the start, I could save a hour’s worth of extra work later on. So do not be afraid to ask for clarification, a good leader or customer will usually appreciate that extra effort you are making.

I’ve been holding in my frustration of that all day so I just had to get that out.

But that today’s Breakdown! I know I have done longer and was hoping for some brilliant insight but I am afraid I just do not have the bandwidth today. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, hoping to relax and still be productive so wish me luck! As always, I look forward to seeing you around the Breakroom!

The Office: Season 5, Episode 22 “Dream Team”

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakroom! We have been having a very busy month over here so we are still working towards building up a routine podcast release. For those wondering there are two big methods for podcasts, there are those who really do record and release every week. This is great for shows about current events so they can be up-to-date but it does require the podcast to be on top of this every week and can be tricky if they were to be on vacation or having personal issues. A more common method, which is what I believe is best for us, is to have a “bank” of episodes ready to go so we have recorded two or three in advance and then still record at least one new one each week. This way they can already be scheduled and put out if we were to be out of the office for a week. That is the method we are planning on doing, but still requires quite a bit of work because of how I research and prepare for an episode. Once this is in place, I do love the idea of also trying to add in a second episode each week to act as a much shorter episode which can focus on topics that came up that week or perhaps draw upon business topics that are not likely to come up in The Office that we want to bring up. But we are working on them so please standby!

Working on them this holiday weekend is a big goal but like I said we have a lot going on. The Duluth-Superior Pride is this weekend and disappointingly we will have to miss the big events as we are hosting the bachelor party for my brother-in-law (my husband is the best man which is why we are hosting it at our place). My fellow nerds out there will be happy to know that the night will consist of some killer barbecue, a unique Dungeons and Dragon one shot, and then an assortment of board games, Magic the Gathering, and Mario Party that people can choose from. So nothing crazy but should be an amazing night. After that, my goal is get organized and work on the podcast to make progress.

Aside from that, our main goal lately has been keeping up on our recent motivation to get back to the gym. We are at about a month (give or take) but I can say that I am already down 10+ pounds since the beginning of July. Besides just trying to get active, I have very much adopted tracking my calories and being very particular with my food. While this method is not for everyone, I chose to do this because I am a very snack-orientated person. I found myself using an obscene amount of sugar in all of my morning coffee, snacking on sweets throughout the day, and just simply eating even if I wasn’t necessarily hungry. So I understood myself well enough to know that I require that extra discipline and accountability. My actual snacking is down, instead focusing on 2-3 meals and then usually protein smoothies in the morning and evening. But my morning coffee and all of that sugar was, in my opinion, my big obstacle to address and it was when I swung by the coffee shop that I remembered how much I love a Nitro cold brew. It is the only form of coffee I can actually drink black so I have been stocking up on canned Starbucks Nitro but I am seriously considering getting a maker. The big cannisters are almost $200, but then there are these smaller versions that might be a wise purchase in the long run. I just wanted to share with you all how I’ve been working on myself as of late and maybe if there are others out there hoping to jumpstart their own regimen. And truly the most important thing I’ve learned, and confirmed by a friend of mine who is very much invested in his own physical transformation, is that it is all about just getting out there and doing something. Don’t have the motivation for a run on the treadmill; just walk. Those 20 pound weights too heavy; go with the 15s. And if you need encouragement, then please just give us a shout out here because Breakroom Breakdown has your back and knows you can do it.

Now that we are thoroughly caught up with what is going on here, let us get into the Breakdown!

You will recall that when we were last at Dunder Mifflin, Michael had to be escorted ahead of his two week notice because he chose to form his own paper company. He begged and pleaded with people to come and when it seemed like no one believed in his idea, Pam decided to follow after and become a salesman at his new company.

This obviously resulted in a bit of a shakeup, namely with Charles Miner continuing to run the branch and he chose to put Kevin in charge of the phones. Not to say anything negative about Kevin but as Jim puts it, he does about as well as one would expect someone like him would do. Answering the phone is the easy part, but his struggle is his inability to being able to then transfer the call to the appropriate person. With everyone’s help and motivation he was finally able to get Andy’s call to him; after about three tries.

The exciting part of the day was it was Pam’s first official day at the Michael Scott Paper Company. While the rest of the office (aside from Jim) didn’t remain in touch with her, I did because I really did want to know how it was going. Michael was still bitter about me not going with so I suppose that is understandable. They were very optimistic, which is what I believe you need a large quantity of when you leave your steady job to open up a new company like that. For instance, Apple originally started in a garage but as they were working out of Michael’s condo they already had a leg up on them from where they were housed day one. Since they didn’t have the time to prep and plan for the company, they are very much making it up as they go along. Michael’s interpretation of this is stocking up on office supplies and then hoping a large breakfast of French toast would fuel their motivation.

Very quickly Pam realized how nervous and terrified Michael was in that he hung himself up on French toast as he tried to figure out what to do next. He had no clients, he spilled batter into his crocs, and he felt like a failure. Thankfully he was not alone, because he had Pam to bring him to his senses. She suggested they start with a list of the tasks they need to complete that day so they can start with the easier tasks. This is really not a bad suggestion. Having a list of your day is never a bad thing but especially when you are feeling overwhelmed, the logic is to not just work through your tasks but to also build your confidence. By getting a sense of accomplishment by completing tasks (no matter how small) you are more confident and are more prepared to tackle the bigger tasks. This does work, I mentioned earlier about my friend giving advice on my gym motivation and he really emphasized that by focusing on both cardio and strengths (rather than just just cardio to cut, for instance) you will have those days where you start to notice slight improvements that really give you the confidence to keep going. And I will say those small victories really do change your perspective; I was feeling pretty good with my look today and my whole day did seem to be better.

So Pam convinced Michael to adhere to the list and begin formulating what needs to be done. She was able to clear off “do a work out” and “eat a breakfast” very quickly. His big goal is to “assemble a sales team” of the best sales people he knows, and then they actually have a meeting scheduled with a potential investor. Once he starts going through the list he really did start to become calmer. Pam describes it well in that in relationships, sometimes when someone breaks down it oddly prompts the other person to be calmer. Unfortunately, they need to also add “find office” to that list because their first official piece of mail is a warning from the condo association for running a business from his place.

This doesn’t slow them down from pursuing their dream team of sales people. First one up is Vikram, the top sales man from the telemarketing company Michael had worked at for a period and he jumped at the chance. They then came up to a bowling alley where Michael claimed to have to use the bathroom, but in reality he wanted to convince our old friend Ryan Howard to come (who is now blonde and tan following his trip to Thailand). Well this dream team heads over to the local retirement home where they have a meeting with an investor. That investor? Michael’s grandmother and her investment club. You’d think it would have been an automatic yes but she really puts him through the ringer to try and defend his company and his team. Unfortunately, it ends up being a hard no and this where things start to fall apart as Vikram sees this as a sign this was a mistake and he should head back. Pam also starts to panic as their master plan starts to slip away from them.

This is now Michael’s turn to rise to the occasion and build some comfort and he decides to do this by finding their new office space. He was able to get ahold of Billy (the building manager of the office park) and he actually does have something that is cheap and available. Turns out it is technically a closet, but it is big enough for tiny company and officially forms their homebase. And it provides that comfort Pam needed, that it proves the company is still real. More importantly, it keeps them right near Dunder Mifflin and as they say, “Keep your friends close.”

You may be wondering what was happening at Dunder Mifflin this day? Now that it is clear Charles is hanging around for a bit, they decide to start to get to know him better. And by getting to know him better, they can start to kiss up to him. Andy was able to figure out that Charles is a huge fan of soccer (as known by Americans but this is properly known as football), and then everyone is suddenly a big fan of the sport. Now I am not a big sports guy by any means, but if I was going to try to get into a sport it would be soccer. It is very hard to tell but it does feel like Charles is completely oblivious to everyone is just faking it. I know this because Charles tried to include Jim in the conversation, which he declined because he doesn’t watch the sport, but then caved and admitted he loves to play it. Dwight catches this lie and convinces the office to play a game after work, all to prove Jim cannot play the sport. Charles loves the idea and suddenly he loves Jim despite having been incredibly apprehensive of him the entire time. They get to the game and for the most part it seems to be going fine, until a kick from Charles goes towards Jim who ducked and this caused the ball to strike Phyllis in the face. Charles is livid towards Jim and they all pile on him for avoiding such a shot rather than taking it. I’m just going to say that with the kick that was at him, I would argue you’d need to be a professionally to feel comfortable in intercepting this so everyone can just get off Jim’s back. Charles is angry at himself and taking it out on Jim; but Jim shouldn’t have lied about playing unless he was prepared to back it up so it is also on him.

Coffee Break: You are not a failure.

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Breakroom! So I decided not to do a full Breakdown this week, I intend on trying to get an extra one this week but I still wanted to post because I have a lot of thoughts going on that I really wanted to share with my reader.

I contemplated putting this is a podcast to celebrate with our official launch from last week but I didn’t want it to feel rushed. Last week our pilot was absolutely meant to be our rough draft as we learn what not only works for our material and format, but also the process of learning the recording tools as I am teaching myself as we go along. We wanted to have it launched in time for Excalibur Con 2025 (which exceeded all projections and kicked ass) but now we will be conforming to a proper schedule which does involve having episodes already banked to maintain that ability.

For those interested in hearing our podcast you can find it at the following locations (and more):

What I wanted to use this post today as part of a Coffee Break is to talk about that thing that are never meant to talk about, and that is how it feels like we must have a roadmap for our entire professional lives already figured out. And if something goes wrong we feel like we shouldn’t complain about it because it is likely our fault because we are not working hard enough. As my reader might remember I got my MBA degree four years ago and have been attempting to grow my career using it, focused on human resources as that is where I currently work and it seems like a reliable industry that is always around. Four years later and hundreds (literally) jobs applied for I can actually count the number of interviews I’ve reviewed on my hands. I know I am not alone, this is happening to so many individuals out there who were taught that if you get a degree, the rest of your professional future will fall into place. But that is no longer the reality and instead we feel like we are applying for jobs into black holes as we do not hear back, we see “over 100 applied” and question what is even the point, we meet all of the qualifications in the job posting and are then told we lack “vision” or “clarity” in how we meet those qualities. And instead of a problem with the system that is corporate America or placing the blame on how these companies conduct business, we are made to feel like we are not trying hard enough. We are told that your degree is good but you should be taking these seminars, getting fancy certifications, and then find ways to get experience but unfortunately since you need experience simply to get a job you will just need to find unpaid ways to get that experience. And I want to say the quiet part outload for everyone and that is I am exhausted, broken, defeated, and consistently feel like just crumbling because it all seems useless.

After applying to a Human Resources job (which would be a good transition up from my current position) almost a month ago, I finally go the call that I have an interview this next week. On the one hand I was excited to finally potentially have a chance to grow; oddly enough it actually came about three hours after I reached out to a friend explaining I am ready to call it quits on Human Resources and I want to transition into an Analyst position. The old me would have been eager to write of the Analyst goal because this is now my chance and then get overly eager and then devastated that I do not get it. What is the new me doing? I am not going to sweat this interview, I will still study (as I always do) but I preparing the mindset that if they choose to go elsewhere, they didn’t deserve me in the first place. I hate that we have to plan our professional futures so carefully because we can no longer simply get a job and then work our way up with experience and remaining in the same country. So I plan on upskilling and finding out how I can perhaps pivot into a different field that can better use my skills and perhaps I’ll actually find more satisfaction instead of consistently being told I am just not good enough.

To those young professionals reading this, it sucks that the world expects you to have an elaborate plan starting from 18 right up until retirement but that is the world we live in. So what advice can I give you?

  1. Learn your strengths. A few years ago my husband, while training to be a coach, had me take a CliftonStrengths assessment to evaluate my strengths. It is consists of 34 strengths that we all possess but we use differently and in various frequency and effectiveness. My top strength was Intellection which means I am an information gather, I make decisions and problem solve using as much information as I can attain in order to make an informed determination. When working with a coach, they would then go through such an assessment with you and help take this information and put it into real world scenarios and how you can use it to achieve your goals.
  2. Life never goes the way you expect it to. I have worked in numerous jobs and always thought that I found my niche, but something changes and I learn to adapt and change. At 35 I have learned that no matter how much I plan I know I cannot guarantee what the future brings, all I can do is do my best to be prepared.
  3. Build a support system. As much as it can hurt to have to admit to your friends or family that you are struggling to grow professionally or just find out what to do, find people who can support you. My husband has always had my back, and I mentioned that friend of mine is going to give me some professional advise and insight on what I can do to grow. I know it feels embarrassing to admit we need help but I think it is crucial to break this stigma where we feel like it is all our fault we cannot succeed despite having followed all of the “rules” we were given growing up.
  4. Upskill and grow. I wish college was enough but while I have a great deal of knowledge and great soft skills, it is the hard skills I need. Soft skills refers to traits like customer service, analytical thinking and even problem solving. Think of them as personality traits that make you a good employee. Hard skills, however, are actual abilities that can be measurable and can typically be learned while soft skills very often are tied to your personality. Examples can be knowing multiple languages, proficiency with specific software, perhaps understanding accounting principles. Once you have an idea of the type of line of work you want to go into, rather than thinking you can be trained at the job you should start figuring out what skills you already have, what should you get, and find means of learning them.
  5. Don’t give up, and do not blame yourself. It is very hypocritical of me to try and tell you to not feel depressed and like a failure that you feel you wasted four years of your life only to now pivot to a new industry, but you are not a failure. The business world is cruel, unnecessarily difficult, and quite simply sucks when you are likely just looking for a job to keep your roof over your head. Do not give up on yourself and do not think of yourself as a failure. Reach out to a recruitment company, check with your friends to see if they know who is hiring, trying to find Youtube videos teaching you how to use Excel. It is not over until you truly have exhausted every avenue and given up and I don’t believe that should ever happen. You could even message here and I could get you in touch with my husband and his coach expertise so there is always something else.

I have gotten very open and honest here and that is because besides the fact that I needed to get this off my chest, I know there are others out there feeling the exact same and I want you to know you are not alone. For those struggling or who have struggled, please reach out and let your fellow reader(s) know so we can support each other. Thank you all for listening (reading) and I hope you all have a fantastic Friday, a great weekend, and be sure to say hi the next time you see me around the Breakroom.
